Hannya Playing Cards

Open for photography purposes.

The Hannya playing cards feature the traditional Japanese Hannya mask, which represents the souls of women who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy - now immortalized through tattoos.

Following on from the Mandala Playing Cards, Damien O'Brien used his own Hannya tattoo as inspiration for the Hannya Playing Cards.

The demonic and dangerous, but also sad and tormented Hannya mask is a tribute to the complexity of human emotions.

If you look straight ahead, the mask appears frightening and angry; If you tilt it slightly downwards, the demon's face appears sad, as if he were crying. Similarly, the gold foil mask on the Hannya playing card case emerges from the darkness of the black mat and peers into your soul.

Two sharp, bull-like horns, metallic eyes and a lustful mouth are decorated with gold foil on each card back. The tools of the trade are highlighted on the jokers.

The individually drawn picture cards pay homage to the creative mischief of magicians such as Jeremy Griffith, Daniel Madison and Damien himself on the individually drawn picture cards.
